MADAGASCAR

Mora-mora is the rythm of Madagascar. A slow pace with African taste and slight tropical notes. The relaxed attitute of its people goes across its unique landscapes and wildlife. There, surrounded by a mix of wild and tropical beauty, I had the privilege of getting lost for almost 20 days.
This is by far the most difficult post I"ve ever written. It has been a journey full of life experiences and write it all down in a single post it"s been the biggest challenge. Therefore, you will not find a guidebook full of details, but a toast to the most enriching and desirable experience I"ve lived so far. I hope that through the following lines and pictures you can get an idea of the unexplored ??charmings that this wonderful country has to offer.

The Republic of Madagascar is an insular country located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Mozambique. It is the world"s fourth largest island. It hasn"t been always an island, since it was formerly attached to the African continent. Once separated it led to the isolation that has favored the conservation of unique wildlife and landscapes.

Although the vast majority of its inhabitants understand French (it"s a former French colony), the national language is Malagasy (almost nobody speaks English, something to keep in mind if you want to visit the country).

A highly recommended trip -almost exclusive- for backpackers, willing to travel for hours in uncomfy transports through unpaved roads, ready to sleep anywhere, eat whatever is available and don"t have fear about negotiating or haggle prices.
As you can see in the upper right map with our stops defined by yellow stars, the trip was divided in two areas: the wild west and the tropical north.
EL SALVAJE OESTE | THE WILD WEST

The essentials: multiple-day river cruise (146 kms.) in a wooden canoe acroos the Tsibirihina river. During the day: visiting the energy of the authentic villages and the exotic fauna (crocodiles, lemurs, chameleons, fishing birds). Overnight: camping under majestic mantles full of stars.

A natural reserve with forests, pointy tops mountains and caves which seemed straight out of the movie The Lord of the Rings. The forest is full of atypical animals while the tops are only achievable climbing with harness. I"ve taken a scar as a souvenir practicing potholing with small equipment across its caves.

A paradise surrounded by more havens (Nosy Komba, Nosy Sakatia, Nosy Tanikely, Nosy Iranja) including a natural reserve, Lokobé, full of snakes and lemurs. We visited all the tiny islands, we walked and immersed ourselves in the warm and clear waters. We scrambled up the rocks and coconut trees, and quenched our thirst with its fresh juice.

The sea life is awesome. Besides the enormous sea turtles and fish of all colors of the rainbow, the little islands were not lacking zebus, chameleons, lemurs, 90 years earthy tortoises...

A special country, with weak communication infrastructure, where fashion is set by colorful sarongs of women who trace long distances on foot. Blogs, social networks and Internet become distant voices in a land of ylang ylang* smelling that traps its astonished guests" looks in this extraordinary paradise. A dream that waking should be prohibited.
