Es bueno que los conozcas para que puedas aplicarlos, o en todo caso, entenderlos cuando los escuches. Aquí te dejamos varios modismos en inglés y frases comunes que ayudaran a enriquecer tu lenguaje y harán que te escuches como un hablante nativo en poco tiempo:
“The best of both worlds”
Aunque se traduzca como “lo mejor de ambos mundos”, significa que puedes disfrutar de dos oportunidades diferentes al mismo tiempo.
“If she work part-time, can look after her kids two days a week, she may managed to get the best of both worlds.”
“Speak of the devil”
Modismo en inglés que hace referencia a la persona de la que estás hablando, por casualidad se aparece en ese momento.
“Hi Max, speak of the devil, I was just telling Mia about your new car.”
“See eye to eye”
Esto significa estar de acuerdo con la opinion de alguien.
“They finally saw eye to eye on the business deal.”
“Once in a blue moon”
Un evento específico que ocurre con poca frecuencia.
“I only go to the cinema once in a blue moon.”
“When pigs fly”.
Esta frase quiere decir que algo nunca va a suceder.
“When pigs fly hell clean up his room.”
“To cost and arm and a leg”
Hace referencia a un producto o servicio que es muy caro.
“Fuel these days costs and arm and a leg.”
“A piece of cake”.
Frase común en inglés para mencionar que algo es o fue muy fácil.
“The English test was a piece of cake.”
“Let the cat out of the bag” o “There is an Elephant in the room”
Modismos en inglés para revelar accidentalmente un secreto o traer a colación una situación que se mantienen en un secreto tenso, de los que muchos saben pero nadie dice nada.
“I let the cat out of the bag about their wedding plans.” “Please tell us Ana, I feel an Elephant in the room”
“To feel under the weather”
No sentirse bien.
“Im really feeling under the weather today; I have a terrible cold.”
“To kill two birds with one stone”
Resolver dos problemas a la vez, con un solo paso sobrepasar dos obstáculos.
“By taking my dad on holiday, I killed two birds with one stone. I got to go away but also spend time with him.”
“To cut corners”
Hacer algo mal o a bajo precio, también se refiere a ser tacaño.
“They really cut corners when they built this bathroom; the shower is leaking.”
“To add insult to injury”
Esto se refiere a empeorar una situación.
“To add insult to injury the car drove off without stopping after knocking me off my bike.”
“You cant judge a book by its cover.
No juzgar a alguien o a algo basado únicamente en la apariencia. En español, suele decirse de forma literal “No juzgar a un libro por su portada”
“I thought this no-brand bread would be horrible; turns out you cant judge a book by its cover.”
“Break a leg”
Frase común en inglés que significa buena suerte, a menudo se les dice a los artistas antes de hacer una presentación.
“Break a leg Kate, Im sure your performance will be great.”
“To hit the nail on the head”
Describir exactamente lo que está causando una situación o un problema. Ser asertivo en cuanto a una opinión.
“He hit the nail on the head when he said this company needs more Human Resources support.”
