My Thoughts

This year Ive been on the quest for reading more Mystery/Thrillers books, inspired by one of my favorite bookstagramers Crime by the Book, and so far it has been so/so because I tend to gravitate to YA and cozy mysteries, not that any of them are bad but honestly, theyre not the mature, heavy book I need. Although thats totally on me, I have found some gem here and there that really bring me closer to my goal. That was the case with this book, I always knew since I pick it up that it was going to be challenging and interesting read but it wasnt until I finished that I was able to really comprehend how complex it was.

All The Wicked Girls is the story of the town of Grace, Alabama and its people after the tragic disappearing of the perfect, kind, music prodigy, church girl, Summer Ryan. How her twin sister, the bad, promiscuous girl, Raine, with the help of two awkward, quirky boys, Noah and Purv, tried to search for her and find out what truly happened. All of this with the presence of a serial killer, “The Bird”, wandering around taking girls from the Briar County without an apparent reason or connection between them.

First of all, as I said on my Instagram, it was a little hard for me to really get into the book because of the writing style. It has a small town southern accent from USA that Im not used to so, I admit that it was complicated and that I also have to expand my regular reading choices because I released I m not that versified. Nevertheless, after a while, I catch the rhythm of the book and it turned out to be so easy to understand that I was almost half of the book before I noticed.

I think the most important aspect about this book is the characters, and I have to say that I love the fact that I hate them all; I read a book a while ago in which I hate the characters and that pretty much bluffed the whole story for me. But in this case, they were multifaceted with many dimensions that, even when I didnt totally connect with them, I understand their motivation and their completely damaged personas, some more than others.

The backstory, the struggles they were facing and the bad choices they made are fascinating to read about. I like how everything merges together to create such unique characters, each more damaged than the other and we struggle with them even if we dont like them. I was pretty much heartbroken for Raine. knowing that I also have sisters and if they leave without telling me when Id known that they might be in danger, it would kill me just as Raine was been slowing killed by her sister run away.

Theres one aspect that it did affect my experience with this book but its something more personal and thats how heavy the religious references popped up throughout the story. I dont like to read religious books or those that feature it at its main point, for me, religious isnt of my concern as long as people respect everybodys believes and dont use it as an excuse for hate. So, when this story centered somehow on it, my feelings got mixed up with the notion that I dont like the subject and the fact that this book is unapologetic critic about it.

Theres definitely a battle between how a proper, good person should be according to the very religious society of that period and the young lives that want to be happy by their own accord. The atmosphere of the story is very dark, complex and enthralling that pretty much keep you guessing whos the real culprit, not only of the disappearing of Summer but also the other five Briar girls, and if the victims would ever be found, alive or dead. However for me, the story was somehow predictable, or I was too good at guessing, so I kind of knew what happened to Summer early but there were some twists that I didnt see coming and were really good.

Overall, this book was really good, which balance the dichotomy of the good and the bad, about the kindness and rudeness, about love and hate, and all those things in between. The author is a really good writer because, in my opinion, its difficult to engage the reader to such book when you use that style, besides nailing such despair and painful feelings from each character so well. I recommend this book to those who dont mind to work harder to get to the good parts, this is a very unique, gripping story that deserves a try even when its difficult to get into, but promises and delivers great rewards.

Este año he estado en la misión de leer más libros de Misterio y Thrillers, inspirada por una de mis bookstagramers favoritas, Crime by the Book, y hasta ahora ha sido más o menos porque tiendo a gravitar hacia YA y Cozy Mysteries, no que cualquiera de ellos sea malo, pero sinceramente, no son el tipo de libro maduro y sustancioso que necesito. Aunque, eso es totalmente mí culpa, he encontrado algunas gemas aquí y allá que realmente se acercan a mi objetivo. Ese fue el caso con este libro, siempre supe desde el principio que iba a ser un libro desafiante e interesante, pero no fue hasta que terminé con él que pude comprender realmente lo complejo que era.

The Wicked Girls es la historia de la ciudad de Grace, Alabama y su gente después de la trágica desaparición de la prodigio musical, perfecta y amable, chica de iglesia, Summer Ryan. De cómo su hermana gemela, la chica mala y promiscua de pueblo, Raine, con la ayuda de dos chicos extraños y peculiares, Noah y Purv, intentan buscarla y averiguar qué sucedió realmente. Todo esto con la presencia de un asesino en serie, "The Bird", deambulando por el alredeor del Condado de Briar llevandose a chicas sin ninguna razón o conexión aparente entre ellas.

En primer lugar, como dije en mi Instagram, fue un poco difícil para mí entrar realmente en el libro por el estilo de escritura. Se encuentra escrito en un acento sureño de Estados Unidos al que no estoy acostumbrado, admito que fue complicado y que también tengo que ampliar mis opciones de lectura porque me dí cuenta de que no soy tan versificada. Sin embargo, después de un tiempo cogí el ritmo del libro y resultó ser tan fácil de entender que casi me encontaba a la mitad antes de que me diera cuenta.

Creo que el aspecto más importante de este libro son los personajes, y debo decir que me encanta el hecho de que los odio a todos; Hace un tiempo leí un libro en el que odie los personajes y eso me descoloco bastante. Pero en este caso, ellos fueron multifacéticos con muchas dimensiones que, incluso cuando no me conecté totalmente con ellos, entiendí su motivación y sus personas completamente dañadas, algunos más que otros.

La historia de fondo, las luchas que enfrentaban y las malas decisiones que tomaron fueron fascinantes de leer. Me gusta cómo todo se fusiona para crear esos personajes únicos, cada uno más dañado que el otro y sufrimos con ellos, incluso si no nos gustan del todo. Estaba bastante desconsolado por Raine. sabiendo que también tengo hermanas y si desaparecen sin decirme conociendo que podrían estar en peligro, me mataría así como Raine estaba siedo lentamente destrosada por su hermana fugitiva.

Hay un aspecto que sí afectó mi experiencia con este libro, pero es algo más personal y es las constantes referencias religiosas durante todo la historia. No me gusta leer libros religiosos o aquellos que lo presentan en su argumento principal, para mí, la religión no es de mi incumbencia, siempre y cuando las personas respeten las creencias de los demás y no lo usen como excusa para el odio. Por lo tanto, cuando esta historia se centró de alguna manera en ello, mis sentimientos se mezclarón con la idea de que no me gusta el tema y el hecho de que este libro es un crítico al respecto.

Definitivamente hay una batalla entre cómo debe ser una buena persona según la sociedad religiosa de ese período y las vidas jóvenes que quieren ser felices por su propia cuenta. La atmósfera de la historia es muy oscura, compleja y cautivadora que te hace adivinar constantemente sobre quién es el verdadero culpable, no solo de la desaparición de Summer sino también de las otras cinco chicas de Briar, y si las víctimas alguna vez serían encontradas, vivas o muerto. Sin embargo, para mí, la historia era de alguna manera predecible, o yo era demasiado buena adivinando, así que supe lo que le sucedió a Summer pronto, pero hubo algunos giros que no ví venir y que fueron realmente buenos.

En general, este libro estuvo bastante bien, equilibrando la dicotomía entre lo bueno y lo malo, sobre la bondad y la rudeza, sobre el amor y el odio, y todo lo que está en el medio. El autor es un escritor realmente bueno porque, en mi opinión, es difícil involucrar al lector en dicho libro cuando se usa ese estilo de escritura, además de capturar la desesperación y los sentimientos dolorosos de cada personaje. Recomiendo este libro a aquellos a quienes no les importa trabajar más duro para llegar a las partes buenas, esta es una historia única y apasionante que merece una oportunidad incluso cuando es difícil entrar ella, pero promete y ofrece grandes recompensas.
