My Thoughts

I picked this book up as part of the Romancetheque book club on Instagram of which Im part of. Although, my attempt with the book chosen for the month of January wasnt my cup of tea and DNFed, the selection for the month of February was a complete Home Run and exceeded expectations. The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa was a captivating romantic comedy mixed in the most perfectly way the rich Brazilian culture, a beautiful love story and feminism at its best.

The Worst Best Man tells the story of Carolina “Lina” Santos, a descendant of Brazilians immigrants who has become one of the rising stars of DC wedding planning circle, but unfortunately, the same can be said about her own love life, case in point, her disaster wedding after her fiancé leaved her the same day that they were supposed to get married after the importunate recommendation of his brother (aka the worst best man, indeed). Now, a year later, Lina is forced to face this fateful event once again when she must work with the same man who destroyed what should have been the best day of her life, after accepting an offer that was impossible to reject. But the relationship between Max and Lina, progressively goes from hate to love, but not everything will be easy since they have a great project to finish, which promises to fix all of Linas problems, a jealous ex and the large and bustling Santos family, which wont allow her to be hurt again.

Empecé este libro como parte del club de lectura Romancetheque en Instagram del que formo parte. Si bien, mi intento con el libro elegido para el mes de enero no fue de lo más fructífero y termine DNFandolo, la selección del mes de febrero fue un completo Home Run. The Worst Best Man por Mia Sosa fue una cautivante comedia romántica que supo mezclar de forma perfecta la rica cultura brasilera, una hermosa historia de amor y el feminismo en su mejor forma.

The Worst Best Man cuenta la historia de Carolina “Lina” Santos, una descendiente de brasileros que se ha convertido en una de las estrellas en ascenso de las organizaciones de bodas en DC, pero que su propia vida amorosa es un desastres después de que su prometido la dejara el mismo día que se suponía iban a casarse tras la importuna recomendación del hermano de este (aka el peor padrino, en efecto). Ahora, un año después Lina se ve forzada a enfrentar una vez más este fatídico evento cuando debe trabajar con el mismo hombre que destruyo lo que tuvo que haber sido el mejor día de su vida, tras aceptar una oferta imposible de rechazar. Pero la relación entre Max y Lina, pasa progresivamente del odio al amor, pero no todo será fácil ya que tienen un gran proyecto que terminar, el cual promete arreglar todos los problemas de Lina, un ex celoso y la numerosa y bulliciosa familia de Lina que no permitirá que la vuelvan a herir.

Lina and Max ** heart eyes **

I loved how they complement each other so well; Lina had a serious and focused personality unfounded in her great responsibility toward her family, as well as her reluctance to trust Max taking into account his part in her wedding disaster. While Max being the youngest of his family, always in the shadow of his, apparently, perfect older brother, lived to be a little rebellious, enough to develop a more charismatic, playful and carefree personality, however we can see throughout the story that he also has a great sense of responsibility and is concerned with proving to himself and others that he is good at what he does. These two incompatible people, with different backgrounds, upbringing and cultures come together in a wonderful way to create a delicious dynamic that moves this book to the perfect points of an adorable, fun and loving story.

Perhaps the most important part of the book isnt about the characters or the story itself but about the warmth of Brazilian culture and its strong bond with family love. Although Im not Brazilian myself, as a Latin American I identify to a great extent with Lina and her family, their family union, their unconditional support and the fact that Latin American women are the strongest, most resilient and extraordinary women Ive ever met. From the get go we can see the support that the women in Linas life, her mother, aunts, cousins and friends, played a key role in the story and is manifested through her decisions, and how the unconditional love that her family has for her moves Lina in the right direction to find the love she deserves.

Me ha encantado como se complementan cada uno, Lina con una personalidad un poco más seria y centrada infundada en su gran responsabilidad para con su familia, así como su reticencia a confiar en Max teniendo en cuanta su participación en el desastre de su boda; mientras que Max es el menor, siempre a la sombra de su, aparentemente, perfecto hermano mayor lo que lo lleva a volverse un poco rebelde, si bien no de forma extrema ni nada parecido, pero si lo suficiente como para que desarrolle una personalidad más juguetona y despreocupada, sin embargo podemos ver a lo largo de la historia que también tiene un gran sentido de la responsabilidad y le preocupa probarse a sí mismo y los demás que es bueno en lo que hace. Estas dos personas incomparables, con diferentes antecedentes, crianzas y culturas se unen de forma maravillosa para crear una deliciosa dinámica que mueve este libro a los puntos perfectos de una historia adorable, divertida y llena de amor.

Quizás la parte más importante del libro no se trata sobre los personajes ni la historia que cuenta sino sobre la calidez de la cultura brasilera y su fuerte lazo con el amor familiar. Si bien, yo no soy brasilera, como latinoamericana me identifico en gran medida con Lina y su familia, su unión familiar, su apoyo incondicional y el hecho de que las mujeres latinoamericanas son las más fuertes, resistentes y extraordinarias que he conocido. Desde un primer momentos podemos ver el apoyo que las mujeres en la vida Lina, su madre, tías, primas y amigas, se manifiesta a través de las decisiones de esta, y como el amor incondicional que su familia tiene por ella mueve a Lina en la dirección correcta para encontrar el amor que tanto se merece.

My favorite part of this book is without a doubt when Max meet and faced the terrifying trial of the Santos family. I can see my own family in that scene.

Overall, this book was a sweet ride, super-fast to read, fun and sensual; or yes, definitely its level of hotness is to die for, but its not cheesy either, in reality the dialogue is quite intelligent and entertaining, and its one of the very few books that, in a long time, didnt make me roll my eyes at the moment of the traditional unconditional love declaration monologue at the end of the book. Im hopeful that the author will write another book about these characters because it had been phenomenal to read about them and there still are some supporting characters who deserve to have their own story, until then you should definitely read this book, and I assure you that you wont regret it.

Mi parte favorita de este libro es sin duda alguna cuando Max conoce y se enfrenta al aterrador juicio de la familia Santos. Puedo ver a mi propia familia en esa escena.

En general, este libro fue un total paseo, súper rápido de leer, divertido y sensual; o si, definitivamente su nivel de sensualidad esta para morirse, pero no es tampoco cursi, en realidad el dialogo es bastante inteligente y entretenido, y es uno de los muy pocos libros que, en mucho tiempo, no me hizo rodar los ojos al momento del tradicional monologo para declarar el amor incondicional que se tienen los protagonistas. Tengo esperanzas de que la autora saque otro libro sobre estos personajes porque han sido fenomenal leer sobre ellos y hay algunos personajes secundarios que merecen tener su propia historia, hasta entonces, definitivamente deben leer este libro, y les aseguro que no se arrepentirán.
