Synopsis

---------Sinopsis

In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.

1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. Shes also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlies parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when shes recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, shes trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the "Queen of Spies", who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemys nose.

Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasnt heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth...no matter where it leads.

My Thoughts

---------Mi Opinión

I recived this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange of a honest review, this does not weight in my opinion of the book.

I dont usually read books set on this time of human history, it has never really caught my attention this time of wars, not even with romantic tints, however, I decided that since I am in this spy reading wave, why not give a chance to a story set in the time when espionage became what we know today. And fortunately, it has been a very good experience to be able to read this book and enter the sorrow in the lives of Charlie and Evelyn (Eve). Alternating between Charlies life after World War II in her relentless pursuit of her cousin Rose, and Eve in her training and work as spies for The Alice Network in World War I, this book is a compendium of experiences that are mixed with humor, love and even horror.

This story keeps the reader in suspense during all its developing, while the author perfectly balances the most devastating moments with humor. And even though the World Wars I and II dont really resonate with me as Latin American, I can still feel the devastation of that time through the authors brilliant presentation of events, setting, time and research regarding that period. What I dont end up quite liking is that in some points it becomes a bit slow, which made me try harder than I would like to finish the book, taking into account that I didnt want to miss any detail of the story.
